Ford . S-10 Alternator TroubleshootingThe Chevrolet S10 pickup truck series was manufactured with a 12-volt alternating generator system coupled to a single battery. The standard 105-amp alternator can provide sufficient electricity to charge the battery and run the truck while in operation, but can wear out and require replacement. The average backyard mechanic can troubleshoot the alternator of an S10 in about 20 minutes. Load Testing Take the alternator to a local auto parts store and have it tested. Most parts stores and some repair shops will test the alternator on a bench tool and check it for electrical issues. A normal alternator will put out over 14 volts, and if it drops to below 13 volts while "loaded," it has a bad voltage regulator, or internal wear, and must be rebuilt. Sounds Listen for odd sounds that occur with the engine running from the location of the alternator. The Chevrolet S10 has a serpentine belt that winds its way through the various drive pulleys, including the alternator's. A sharp squealing sound could indicate a slipping belt, which would not spin the alternator and undercharge the system. A harsh grinding noise could be indicative of bad alternator bearings, at the center of the unit's pulley shaft. A loud humming or ticking sound, while rare, is caused by an electrical fault within the alternator's coils, which are dissipating the charge back into the truck. This is normally accompanied by "strobing" lights or random blown fuses. Ground Check the alternator's ground wire, attached to the engine block with a hex-head bolt, for a solid connection. This is often the most overlooked part of the system and can lead to most of the problems described above if left loose for too long. A shorted or weak ground can cause the truck's battery to slowly die, as it is not receiving the proper charge. The lack of a ground can also cause the alternator to short out. The S10 alternators have an internal voltage regulator, a sensitive electrical component, which can become damaged also.
Ford . How to Test a Car's AlternatorThe alternator in your car provides power to charge the battery and run all of your power hungry accessories. If the alternator fails, it's a matter of hours, or even minutes, until your car stops working altogether. Knowing how to properly test your car's alternator will save you time and money and help to keep your car running properly. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need A MicroVAT or DTAC testing system. Step by Step : 1 Clean the positive and negative battery terminals to ensure a good connection with the tester's clamps. 2 Connect the positive and negative clamps to the appropriate battery terminals. The clamps must make firm contact with the battery terminals or the test results will be inaccurate or the tester may not work at all. 3 Turn the tester on and choose the option for "full charging system test." This will test your battery, starter and alternator and provide the most accurate picture of the problem. 4 Follow the directions on the tester's screen. These instructions will include cranking the vehicle after the battery test is performed, holding the engine at a certain RPM range and turning on certain accessories. 5 Read the results displayed on the tester's screen. The tester should scroll through the results, starting with the battery, then the starter and finally the alternator. An alternator test result showing diode ripple problems indicates a bad alternator. Tips & Warnings You don't need anything fancy to take the corrosion off of your battery terminals, any soda or even hot water will do the job nicely. There are other ways to determine if the alternator in your car is failing, though some of them can be unsafe. The best option is to visit an auto parts store and ask if they can test your alternator; most places will do this for free. It also stabilizes the voltage in the electrical system and provides current whenever the electrical demands exceed the output of the charging system. Quite a helpful little gadget! On the battery, attached to either the top or the sides of the box, are two large metal terminals. One is a positive terminal; the other is a negative terminal. You can tell which is which because the positive terminal is usually larger and may have a "+" or the word "Positive" on or near it. On many vehicles, there's a red cap on the positive terminal, and the battery cable leading to it may be red as well. The cable to the negative terminal is usually black. The clamps on the cables that you use to jump-start a dead battery are usually colored red and black so that you can tell which one goes where. You can find instructions for jump-starting a dead battery in Chapter 21. Ford . Can cop cars change traffic lights?

I remembered my instructor saying that if you hear a clicking noise (that's your solenoid) but your engine won't start running, you probably have a loose wire somewhere between the ignition switch and the starter. So I opened the hood (it was only the second time I'd gotten that far) and peeked in. Sure enough, I saw a cluster of wires on the firewall in front of my steering wheel. (The fire-wall is the divider between the interior of your car and the under-the-hood area. It runs from the windshield down.) I could see where the wires ran to the battery, along the frame of the car, but after that I got lost. I ended up calling the AAA. When the AAA truck arrived, I proudly informed the technician that I knew what was wrong. "It's just a loose wire between my battery and my starter," I announced. "Then why didn't you fix it yourself?" he asked. "Because I don't know which gadget is the starter!" He was nice enough to keep from laughing, and I felt better when the problem d/dturn out to be a loose wire on the starter. He also pointed out the starter and showed me where the wires ran that connected to it. Today, most batteries are sealed and don't require much maintenance. However, deposits do form on the terminals, and they can impede the flow of current. Chapter 3 tells you how to check your battery and remove these deposits. The starter After the battery sends the current to the starter solenoid (refer to Figure 5-1), the current goes to the starter. The starter is the device that makes your engine turn over. (Figure 5-3 shows what a starter looks like, and Figure 5-4 shows how a starter works.) It's an electrical motor with a gear called a starter drive at one end. The starter drive engages a ring gear on a flywheel that's bolted to the back of the engine crankshaft. When you turn your key in the ignition switch, the starter drive slides down the shaft and engages the ring gear. This spins the flywheel, which starts the crankshaft turning so that the pistons can go up and down, the spark plugs can fire, and the engine can start running. As soon as the engine is started, the starter has done its job, and you should let go of the key. As your key returns to the "On" (or "Run") position, where it stays until you shut off the engine, the starter drive disengages from the flywheel, and your engine continues running on the fuel and air that are being pumped into its cylinders. . If you keep the key in the "Start" position after the engine starts running, you'll hear a strange noise. That noise is the clutch in the starter drive that allows the engine to spin faster than the starter. Even though this one-way clutch prevents starter damage once the engine starts, it's not a good idea to hold the key in the "Start" position once the engine is under its own power. Try not to keep the starter engaged this way for longer than ten seconds at a time. If the vehicle doesn't start, allow the starter to cool down for one to two minutes before attempting to start it again. Failure to do so can overheat the starter and damage it. And don't turn the key to the "Start"position when the engine is running. If you do, you can damage the gear on the starter and the ring gear on the flywheel. Part II: What Makes It Go? The Charging System After you start your engine, it (usually) runs at a nice steady rumble. This is possible because as soon as the pistons in the cylinders start to go up and down, your car begins to run on its usual diet of fuel and air (read all about it in Chapter 6). When you let go of the key and your ignition switch moves from "Start" to "On," the electric current stops flowing to the starter but continues to flow through the charging system and the rest of the electrical system.
